Tyrrell's Wines is one of Australia’s most historic family-owned wineries, established in 1858 in the Hunter Valley and internationally recognised for setting the benchmark for Hunter Valley Semillon. Vat 47 holds a genuinely unique place in Australian wine history — first made by Murray Tyrrell, it's widely credited as Australia's original Chardonnay, and the wine has been produced continuously for over five decades since. Fruit is drawn exclusively from three of Tyrrell's own vineyards: the HVD vineyard (planted with the original Penfolds clone back in 1923), the NVC vineyard (with 30-year-old vines), and the Short Flat vineyard, where Murray Tyrrell planted the original Chardonnay vines in 1968 — giving the wine a genuinely rare, multi-generational vineyard pedigree few other Australian Chardonnays can claim. Production has deliberately shrunk to around a third of what it was in the early 1990s, effectively making it close to a single-vineyard-calibre wine by volume alone. It's built a remarkable, sustained critical track record — recent vintages have scored as high as 98 points from Tyrrell's own tasting panel, 97 points from Halliday Wine Companion, and drawn glowing praise from international critics, with one reviewer calling it "the sexiest Chardonnay from the Hunter Valley" capable of holding its own against any top Chardonnay in the world.
