Disaronno is produced by Illva Saronno in the town of Saronno, in Italy's Lombardy region, built on a legend dating back to 1525 involving Renaissance painter Bernardino Luini and a local innkeeper's homemade liqueur. The recipe was rediscovered and commercialised by the Reina family in the 17th century, and the brand — originally known as "Amaretto di Saronno" before being renamed simply "Disaronno" in 2001 — has grown into the world's favourite Italian liqueur and the best-selling amaretto globally. Instantly recognisable by its elegant square-cut bottle and golden label, Disaronno remains one of the most widely distributed and celebrated liqueur brands in the world.

Disaronno's origin story is genuinely one of the most romantic in the entire spirits category: legend holds that in 1525, an innkeeper in Saronno, chosen by Renaissance painter Bernardino Luini (a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci) to model as the Madonna in a fresco, gifted the artist a flask of amber liqueur she'd made herself — the recipe that eventually became Disaronno.
