Peter Lehmann established his namesake winery in 1979 in the Barossa Valley, South Australia, driven in large part by a desire to support local growers during a crippling grape oversupply crisis at the time. The first vintage, appropriately named "The Futures," was made on the strength of a handshake — a commitment to pay growers once the wine had sold, with Peter's word as his bond, cementing his reputation as a genuine champion of the Barossa growing community. The story behind Eight Songs reflects Peter Lehmann's genuine love of the arts — inspired by "Eight Songs for a Mad King," one of his favourite ensemble musical works, he created this wine specifically to showcase a softer, more elegant, more stylish side of Barossa Shiraz, distinct from the region's typically bigger, more powerful expressions. Sourced from Peter Lehmann's longest-standing, most loyal growers — including Peter Scholz at Willows Vineyard and Light Pass, Mike McCarthy at Bethany, and Ralph Schrapel at Ebenezer — the wine is fermented on skins for up to two weeks, individually pressed and matured in barrel through malolactic fermentation, before the finished batches are selected at Peter Lehmann's own annual classification tasting and matured a further 18 months in French oak hogsheads (40% new). That careful, grower-first process traces directly back to the winery's founding in 1979, when Peter Lehmann established the business specifically to support Barossa growers through a crippling grape oversupply — the very first vintage, called "The Futures," was sealed with nothing more than a handshake, promising to pay growers once the wine had sold.
