Peter Lehmann established his namesake winery in 1979 in the Barossa Valley, South Australia, driven in large part by a desire to support local growers during a crippling grape oversupply crisis at the time. The first vintage, appropriately named "The Futures," was made on the strength of a handshake — a commitment to pay growers once the wine had sold, with Peter's word as his bond, cementing his reputation as a genuine champion of the Barossa growing community. Stonewell has genuine, decades-deep pedigree — Peter Lehmann's own team recall the wine's story as "a lot of blood, sweat and tears," first crafted in 1987 as a deliberate "Show Dry Red" project, taking the best lot of the vintage's red wine and maturing it separately in American oak. The name comes from the Stonewell Road district in Marananga, chosen in recognition of the exceptional Shiraz grown there, though fruit is drawn far more broadly today — usually no more than a dozen small, old vineyards each year, some planted as far back as 1885, producing sparse, tiny "Little Black Jewels" with crops typically under 1.5 tonnes per acre. That selectivity and patience — Stonewell is deliberately released five years after vintage for optimal ageing — has made it one of Australia's genuine benchmark wines, with the 2017 vintage scoring an outstanding 97 points from Halliday Wine Companion, and critic James Halliday specifically praising even the challenging 2011 vintage for how perfectly ripe its black fruits showed in blind tasting. A 30-year vertical tasting hosted by Decanter confirmed its remarkable longevity, with a 1989 magnum still showing beautifully decades later.
