Mount Pleasant Lovedale Semillon 750ml

The Mount Pleasant Lovedale Semillon is one of Australia's most celebrated single-vineyard white wines, made exclusively from gnarly, twisted vines planted in 1946 by legendary Hunter Valley winemaker Maurice O'Shea. Genuinely rare by design — Mount Pleasant only labels a wine "Lovedale" in vintages considered truly outstanding, and has declassified numerous years entirely rather than release a lesser wine under the name. Delicate yet powerful, with lime pith, pomelo and lemon sherbet character in youth that evolves into toast, honey and nuttiness with age, it's widely regarded as the benchmark of the unique, unrepeatable Hunter Valley Semillon style.

Nose: Delicate, fragrant perfume reminiscent of apple blossom, with lime pith, pomelo and lemon sherbet leading the way.
Palate: Achingly fresh with tensile, quivering energy, unfurling lemon and citron notes, developing over years into lemon-lime, toast, honey and nuttiness.
Finish: Long and persistent, with unparalleled flavour length that continues to deepen and evolve for decades in the bottle.
(Note: exact flavour profile and ABV shift depending on vintage and bottle age — the notes above reflect both youthful and cellared characteristics of this wine's consistent house style.)
Mount Pleasant was established in 1921 in Pokolbin, Hunter Valley, by legendary winemaker Maurice O'Shea — often called the father of Australia's modern winemaking. The McWilliam family purchased the estate in the 1930s and continued to support O'Shea's winemaking, and his legacy has been carried forward by a succession of Chief Winemakers, with Adrian Sparks taking the role in 2018 as the fifth to hold the position. Mount Pleasant remains one of the Hunter Valley's most historically significant wineries, with the Lovedale Semillon standing as one of its most celebrated and selectively released wines.
Lovedale is made exclusively from a single block planted in 1946 — gnarly, twisted vines of an unidentified clone, scattered with random "one-percenter" vines that aren't standard Semillon at all, a genetic quirk unique to this specific vineyard that simply cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world. What makes this wine even more distinctive is Mount Pleasant's own restraint: the wine is only labelled "Lovedale Semillon" in vintages the winery considers truly outstanding, and has been declassified and withheld entirely in numerous years — including both 2015 and 2016 — rather than release a lesser wine under the name. That selectivity, combined with the site's unique sandy aggregate loam soils, has made Lovedale arguably the benchmark for a genuinely unique Australian wine style found nowhere else on earth: dry Semillon capable of both vibrant, citrus-driven youth and decades of graceful, honeyed evolution. Mount Pleasant itself was named Winery of the Year by James Halliday in 2017, and traces its history to Maurice O'Shea, often called the father of Australia's modern winemaking. This is a serious wine for serious collectors — critics recommend revisiting bottles at 5, 10, 20 and even 30 years to fully appreciate what the site can achieve, making it a genuine centrepiece for any Australian wine collection.
