Mount Pleasant Cellar Aged Elizabeth Semillon 750ml

The Mount Pleasant Cellar Aged Elizabeth Semillon is one of Australia's most historically significant white wines, first created by legendary winemaker Maurice O'Shea in 1956 to honour the first-ever visit to Australia by a reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. Made from Mount Pleasant's own Pokolbin estate vineyards and deliberately held back at the winery — typically released around five years of age — it's unoaked, fermented cool in stainless steel, and left to develop naturally in bottle. Bright citrus and lime in youth give way to toast, honey and lanolin with time, making it the benchmark example of aged Hunter Valley Semillon, without the customer needing to do any of the cellaring themselves.

Palate: Fine, tight and pure, with a classic backbone of fresh lemon and lime acidity, softened by a lovely honeyed, waxy texture and custard-like richness.
Finish: Long and satisfying, seamless and refreshing, with the fine acid structure that has made this wine legendary for its longevity.
(Note: exact flavour profile and ABV shift depending on vintage and bottle age at release — the notes above reflect the wine's consistent house style across vintages.)
Mount Pleasant was established in 1921 in Pokolbin, Hunter Valley, by legendary winemaker Maurice O'Shea — often called the father of Australia's modern winemaking. The McWilliam family purchased the estate in the 1930s and continued to support O'Shea's winemaking, and his legacy has been carried forward by a succession of Chief Winemakers, with Adrian Sparks taking the role in 2018 as the fifth to hold the position. Mount Pleasant remains one of the Hunter Valley's most historically significant wineries, with the Lovedale Semillon standing as one of its most celebrated and selectively released wines.
Few white wines in Australia carry a pedigree quite like Elizabeth — created in 1956 by Maurice O'Shea specifically to mark the first visit of a reigning monarch to Australian shores, it was cellared for over a decade before its original 1968 release, arriving during a pivotal era for Australian wine and helping shape the country's appreciation for dry, unoaked Semillon matured in bottle ever since. This "Cellar Aged" release continues that founding idea directly: rather than selling the wine young and asking the customer to do the waiting, Mount Pleasant holds it back at the winery — typically around five years — specifically to let the complex, toasty layers develop before it ever reaches a shelf. Made unoaked and fermented cool in stainless steel to preserve absolute purity, it's drawn consistently strong scores across vintages, including a 94-point rating from CellarTracker's aggregate community reviews for the 2013 vintage and 90+ points across several other years. It's widely regarded as exceptional value for genuinely aged Hunter Semillon, and reviewers repeatedly call it one of the best ways to understand why this uniquely Australian wine style has such a devoted following. A must for anyone building a serious Hunter Valley Semillon collection, or wanting to taste real bottle-aged complexity without years of their own cellar space.
