Craggy Range is a family-owned New Zealand winery formed in 1997/1998 by Australian businessman Terry Peabody and Master of Wine Steve Smith, built on the selection of exceptional single vineyard sites across Hawke's Bay and Martinborough. Every Craggy Range wine comes from a single, named vineyard, with individual parcels fermented and matured separately to preserve genuine site character rather than blending for broad consistency. The estate's Martinborough vineyards, centred on Te Muna Road, sit alongside its Hawke's Bay operations in the Gimblett Gravels district, together forming the core of a range widely regarded as among New Zealand's finest and most terroir-driven wine producers.

Craggy Range was formed in 1997/1998 through a partnership between Australian businessman Terry Peabody and Master of Wine Steve Smith, and the Te Muna Road Vineyard was specifically chosen for its unique terroir — carved by the ancient Huangarua River into three distinct terraces, with the Sauvignon Blanc grown on the younger, free-draining lower terrace, where genuine climatic stress produces exceptional concentration and flavour. Martinborough's dry summers, large diurnal temperature swings and persistent winds give this wine an aromatically pure, mineral-driven, intensely structured character that genuinely distinguishes it from the more typically vibrant, tropical style associated with Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc further south. Craggy Range's own winemaking team has described the wine as showing "ripe citrus flavours and a bright, pristine purity," using a genuinely meticulous approach — separate parcel management, a mix of fermentation vessels including French oak, sandstone tanks and Austrian foudres, and partial wild yeast fermentation. That craft has been recognised at the very highest level, with the 2025 vintage awarded 97 points and Platinum at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2026, alongside consistent 93-point scores from Wine Spectator across multiple vintages. An excellent match for fresh oysters, shellfish, goat's cheese, grilled white fish and Asian cuisine, and a genuine benchmark for what New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc can achieve beyond the more familiar Marlborough style.
