Leeuwin Estate is a family-owned pillar of Margaret River winemaking, established in 1973 after the legendary Robert Mondavi identified the site as being capable of producing world-class wines. As one of the five founding wineries of the region, the estate rose to global fame in 1981 when its Art Series Chardonnay was awarded the highest recommendation by Decanter, forever putting Western Australian viticulture on the international map. The winery is uniquely defined by its marriage of fine wine and the arts, famously hosting spectacular outdoor concerts and featuring commissioned works from leading contemporary Australian artists on its prestige labels. Today, under the second generation of the Horgan family, Leeuwin Estate remains a benchmark of excellence, celebrated for its uncompromising commitment to quality and its ability to produce long-lived, site-specific wines that compete with the finest in the world.
The Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon holds "Distinguished" status in the Langton's Classification — Australia's benchmark ranking of the country's finest wines — and Robert Parker himself has described it as one of Australia's great Bordeaux-styled Cabernets, placing this bottle in genuinely elite company. The 2022 vintage in particular is being recognised as one of the standout years for Cabernet in Margaret River's recent history, with a long, rain-free autumn allowing the fruit to ripen slowly and fully, and independent critics have scored it as high as 95-97 points, ranking it among the top Cabernets in the entire region for the vintage. Leeuwin's approach — individually selected vineyard parcels, partial whole-bunch fermentation, and around 22 months in 50% new French oak, with small additions of Malbec, Petit Verdot and Merlot for structure and complexity — reflects a level of craft consistent with the estate's decades-long reputation for producing wines that rank alongside the world's finest. With critics advising a drinking window stretching a full decade or more, this is a genuinely serious cellaring wine as much as it is a drink-now Cabernet, making it a strong pick for collectors as well as anyone wanting a standout bottle for a special occasion.
