The Mount Pleasant Mountain A is a medium-bodied dry red Shiraz from the Hunter Valley, New South Wales, sourced from the historic 1965 vines at Mount Pleasant's Rosehill vineyard. The name carries real history — "Mountain A" was one of Maurice O'Shea's own code names for his distinct blending styles, alongside Mountain B, C and D, each representing a different weight and character within his portfolio. Floral and aromatic, with hibiscus, tea rose, redcurrant and blood plum character, it's matured in a small proportion of new French oak puncheons, delivering elegance and perfume rather than sheer power. Vintage may vary depending on current stock.

Mount Pleasant was established in 1921 in Pokolbin, Hunter Valley, by legendary winemaker Maurice O'Shea — often called the father of Australia's modern winemaking. The McWilliam family purchased the estate in the 1930s and continued to support O'Shea's winemaking, and his legacy has been carried forward by a succession of Chief Winemakers, with Adrian Sparks taking the role in 2018 as the fifth to hold the position. Mount Pleasant remains one of the Hunter Valley's most historically significant wineries, with the Lovedale Semillon standing as one of its most celebrated and selectively released wines.
Mountain A is part of Mount Pleasant's "Mountain Range," a group of wines that pay direct homage to Maurice O'Shea's mastery as a blender — O'Shea had a legendary ability to identify small, unique parcels of fruit and gave each style its own code name depending on body weight: Mountain C for light-bodied, Mountain A for medium-bodied, and Mountain B and D for fuller styles. This particular wine is sourced specifically from the 1965-planted vines at Rosehill, matured in less than 20% new French oak puncheons for around 9 months — a considered, restrained oak regime that lets the fruit's natural floral perfume lead rather than being dominated by wood. Respected critic Campbell Mattinson singled it out in a recent vintage review, noting it "rocketed so far up my 'most preferred' list" on a second tasting, specifically praising its tannin, balance and perfume, with "cigar box tannins" as a highlight. It's a wine built for genuine ageing — reviewers note it will develop "glacially" over a decade or more when cellared well — while still being deeply drinkable and complex on release. A compelling pick for Hunter Valley Shiraz collectors wanting a genuine piece of O'Shea's own blending philosophy, distinct from the estate's single-vineyard releases.
