Peter Lehmann established his namesake winery in 1979 in the Barossa Valley, South Australia, driven in large part by a desire to support local growers during a crippling grape oversupply crisis at the time. Sparkling Shiraz is a genuinely unique Australian wine style found almost nowhere else in the world, and former Peter Lehmann Chief Winemaker Andrew Wigan was specifically inspired to craft a great one from Barossa Shiraz back in the 1980s — a tradition this wine carries forward as one of the estate's most celebrated releases. Fruit is sourced exclusively from four long-term, trusted growers planted in the Ebenezer and Light Pass districts, selected specifically for a silky tannin profile and sweet red berry fruit expression rather than generic regional fruit. The winemaking process is genuinely painstaking: fermented on skins for up to 10 days, matured 12 months in older French oak hogsheads, then bottle-fermented using the traditional method and aged on yeast lees for a full 36 months before disgorgement. A small percentage of Peter Lehmann's own "The King" Vintage Port is then added as the dosage liqueur, deepening the wine's complexity and enhancing its rich, Christmas cake fruit character — a genuinely distinctive technique rarely used elsewhere.
