Pierro is a Margaret River winery founded in 1979 by Dr Mike Peterkin on Caves Road in Willyabrup, Western Australia, now also involving winemaker Nic Peterkin. Widely regarded as one of the region's founding and most acclaimed Chardonnay producers, Pierro has been credited with establishing a stylistic benchmark that many other Australian Chardonnay makers have followed since the mid-1980s. The estate's Chardonnay is consistently rated among the finest in the country, combining great finesse with impressive power, and the winery's reputation extends to its red wines as well, particularly in strong vintages.
Pierro has been working with Chenin Blanc since Dr Mike Peterkin first planted the variety in Willyabrup in 1980, giving the estate's Chenin genuine vine-age depth that few other Margaret River producers can match with this variety — it's not a recent trend pickup, but a style Pierro has quietly refined for over four decades. Chenin Blanc remains relatively rare in Margaret River compared to the region's dominant Chardonnay and Semillon Sauvignon Blanc plantings, making this a distinctive pick for wine drinkers who want to try something outside the region's usual white wine styles. Its bright, tropical-leaning profile and lively acidity make it a genuinely food-versatile wine — equally suited to fresh seafood, light salads and creamy cheeses — while still holding enough structure to develop further with a few years in the cellar. It's a strong choice for anyone curious about Chenin Blanc from a producer with real pedigree in the variety, rather than a passing fad.
