Veuve Capet is a French spirits house based in Reims, founded by historian Timothée, who named the brand after Marie Antoinette de Habsbourg-Lorraine — the last Queen of France, who became known as "Veuve Capet" after her husband's death. The brand's flagship Vodka, launched in 2014 after nearly two years of development, was the first ever made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes, sourced from the Côte des Blancs. French designer Sam Baron was commissioned to create the brand's distinctive bottle, drawing on historic bottle styles to reflect the purity of the spirit inside. Veuve Capet holds a genuine claim to originality: it's the first vodka ever made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes, sourced from the Côte des Blancs — the very birthplace of the Chardonnay variety, more commonly associated with world-class Champagne and white Burgundy than spirits. Grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted, then only the pure juice is used (no pomace or lees), before undergoing five separate distillations in a column still to reach 96.4% purity, retaining the grape's natural elegance while stripping away harshness. It took nearly two years to perfect the first bottle, reflecting a genuinely considered, small-scale approach rather than mass production. The name and striking bottle design pay tribute to Marie Antoinette — who became "Veuve Capet" (Widow Capet) after her husband King Louis XVI's death — with the words "Tout vu tout su tout oublié" ("all seen, all known, all forgotten") stamped into the base of the bottle, a genuinely elegant historical narrative for a category that's often light on storytelling.
