Yamazaki is Japan’s first commercial whisky distillery. It was founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii. The distillery sits near Kyoto, where soft water and seasonal climate shifts enhance maturation. This location gives the whisky a unique edge.
Yamazaki also uses multiple yeast strains and a variety of casks. These include American oak, sherry butts, and rare Japanese Mizunara oak. As a result, the distillery creates layered, elegant single malts. Its whiskies continue to earn global recognition and define Japanese single malt excellence.
This release is built on an extravagant use of virgin Mizunara oak — casks made from Japanese oak that is notoriously difficult to work with due to its tendency to leak, which is exactly why so few producers use it at the scale Yamazaki does here. Every component in the blend is at least 12 years old, giving the whisky real depth rather than relying on youth and cask influence alone. Released only once a year through a lottery application system since 2021, genuine scarcity is built into how this bottle reaches the market, and the 2023 edition has been noted by reviewers as a step up in elegance from the 2021 and 2022 releases that preceded it. The torafu tiger-grain paper label and warehouse-themed packaging make it a strong collector's piece as well as a serious whisky, ideal for anyone building a vertical collection of Yamazaki's annual limited editions.
